Where to Kitesurf Each Month: Top 3 Spots for Every Month, With Data

Chase the season, not the spot. Cape Town and Sal carry the northern winter, Dakhla owns spring, Kalpitiya and the Meltemi take the summer, and Brazil barely misses a day from August to December. Every pick below is ranked by measured windy days (12+ knots during the day, ERA5 2019-2024), with air, water and wetsuit for each spot.

Most trip planning starts with a spot and then asks when to go. Flip it. Pick your dates first, then go where the wind statistically is. This guide ranks the top three spots for every month of the year using measured windy days, not brochure promises: a windy day means 12+ knots (22 km/h, 14 mph) between 09:00 and 18:00, counted from ERA5 reanalysis data across 2019-2024.

Each pick shows four things: windy days in percent, daytime max air, sea surface temperature, and the wetsuit that water calls for. Wetsuit shorthand: none at 26 C (79 F) and up, shorty at 22-25 C (72-77 F), a 3/2 at 18-21 C (64-70 F), a 4/3 under 18 C (64 F). If you want the suit call done for you, the wetsuit calculator takes the water temperature and answers.

Method and limits

Daytime max wind from ERA5 hourly data, threshold 12 knots, one grid point per spot, 2019-2024, pulled September 2026. The model grid smooths out bays and local thermal effects, so real windy-day counts at these spots run a bit higher than shown, not lower. It also means strongly thermal spots like Tarifa and Lo Stagnone score unrealistically low in this dataset, which is why they are not listed. Scoring exactly this kind of spot-level wind quality is the problem the KiteMate app we are building works on.

For the broader seasonal logic behind these numbers, trade winds, monsoons and the Meltemi, read the best months to kitesurf around the world. If you are picking a first trip, cross-check against the best destinations for beginners, because the windiest month at a spot is not always the friendliest one to learn in.

Bottom line

There is strong wind somewhere in every month of the year. Southern winter belongs to Cape Town and the trades at Sal and Boracay, spring belongs to Dakhla, summer to Kalpitiya, El Gouna and the Meltemi, and from August to December Brazil is about as close to guaranteed wind as this sport gets. Pick your dates, pick the matching spot, and pack the wetsuit the water demands, not the one the air suggests.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I kitesurf in January?
The three strongest January picks in our data are Cape Town, South Africa (84% windy days, the Cape Doctor blowing 25-35 knots, 15 C water so bring a 4/3), Boracay in the Philippines (80%, flat shallow lagoon, 28 C water, no wetsuit) and Sal, Cape Verde (71%, chop and shore break with waves at Ponta Preta, shorty weather).
What is the windiest kitesurf month and spot in this data?
October in Jericoacoara, Brazil: 100% windy days in the 2019-2024 ERA5 sample, meaning wind reached 12+ knots during the day every single October day in the data. Ilha do Guajiru in September (99%), Cumbuco in October (97%) and Dakhla in May (96%) are right behind it.
Where is the best kitesurfing in June, July and August?
Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka is the standout (94% windy days in June, 82% in July), with El Gouna, Egypt at 90% in June and Prasonisi on Rhodes building through the Meltemi season to 76-78% in July and August. From August the Brazilian season opens with Jericoacoara and Cumbuco both at 96%.
How were the windy days counted?
A windy day is any day with 12+ knots (22 km/h, 14 mph) between 09:00 and 18:00 local time, computed from ERA5 reanalysis hourly data for 2019-2024, using one grid point per spot. Air is the daytime maximum and water is sea surface temperature from the same source.
Why are Tarifa and Lo Stagnone not on the list?
The ERA5 model grid smooths out local thermal effects, so spots whose wind is mostly thermally driven, like Tarifa and Lo Stagnone, score far lower in this dataset than they perform in real life. Rather than show misleading numbers, we left them out. The same smoothing means real windy-day counts at the listed spots are a little higher than shown, not lower.
