Why snowkiting is easier to learn than water kiting

The reputation is real: most people pick up the riding side of snowkiting faster than water kitesurfing. The reasons are straightforward.

The biggest one is the waterstart. On water, the hardest single skill is getting up onto a moving board from a floating start while flying the kite, and it’s where beginners spend hours. On snow you’re already standing on your skis or board before the kite even pulls. You point downwind, let the kite build power, and you’re moving. That whole frustrating stage simply doesn’t exist.

Beyond that:

  • Constant feedback. The surface is under your feet the entire time, so you feel your edges and balance continuously, instead of being submerged and reset every time you fall.
  • Smaller, more manageable kites. Snow and ice have far less drag than water, so you fly smaller kites for the same wind, and smaller kites are quicker and less intimidating to handle.

The control side of snowkiting mirrors water kiting closely. The differences are the board, the lack of a wetsuit, and the cold-weather kit.

Foil vs inflatable: which kite for snow

This is the first real gear decision, and it splits from water kiting.

On water, almost everyone rides inflatable kites (often called LEI, leading-edge inflatable) because they float and relaunch off the water. On snow, neither of those advantages applies, and a different trade-off takes over. Many snowkiters favour foil kites, including single-skin foils, for a few practical reasons:

  • They pack small and light, which suits hiking to a field or up to a plateau.
  • There’s nothing to burst. Slamming an inflatable onto hard ice, rock or a buried obstacle can wreck it. A foil has no inflated bladder to puncture that way.
  • They handle light and gusty land wind well, which is common away from open coastlines.

That said, an inflatable kite works perfectly fine on snow, and if you already own water kites, you can start with them and learn the sport before buying anything snow-specific. The honest summary: foils are the popular dedicated choice, but your existing inflatable will get you riding. Either way, you’ll rig smaller than you would on water for the same wind.

Skis or snowboard?

Ride whatever you already know. The kite is the new skill, so don’t add a new board discipline on top of it if you can avoid it.

If you’re starting from zero on both:

  • Skis are often considered slightly easier for the first sessions. They make it simpler to keep facing forward and to ride in the directions the kite pulls you, including riding “switch,” because you’re not locked into one stance.

How much wind, and where to ride

For where to learn, the ideal beginner venue is a wide, flat, open space with steady wind and no obstacles: a big frozen lake (where it’s confirmed safe and thick enough), a broad flat field, or an open plateau. Flat terrain keeps avalanche risk out of the picture and gives you room to make mistakes. Save anything with slope, trees or terrain features until you’ve got real control and proper avalanche training.

Safety: the part you can’t skip

Snowkiting is rewarding and it’s also genuinely hazardous if you treat it casually. Two things deserve emphasis.

Get proper instruction. You’re flying a powerful kite that can drag, lift and slam you, on a surface that can be ice-hard. If you ride in or near the mountains, you need avalanche education, you need to carry and know how to use a transceiver, probe and shovel, and you need to check the avalanche forecast for the day. If you already kite on water, snowkiting is one of the best things you can do in winter. The kite control is the same skill, so a season on snow keeps your wind sense and bar instincts sharp while the sea is too cold.
