One study reported an injury rate of about 10.5 injuries per 1,000 hours of kiting. That’s slightly higher than windsurfing and roughly comparable to some contact sports. The most common injuries
One study’s breakdown was led by joint injuries (around 101 cases), then muscle and tendon strains (47), wounds and cuts (36), and fractures (28). A lot of these happen on land, during launching and landing, or from being dragged across the beach, rather than out on the water. It’s different, not simply worse.
- Windsurfing has no powerful kite to manage, so its catastrophic-risk profile is lower, but the injury rate is roughly comparable and many people find it slower to reach independent riding.
- Surfing carries no equipment-power risk at all, but it has its own hazards (reefs, hold-downs, crowds) and a long learning curve to read waves.

How to make it as safe as possible
The risk reduction is straightforward and almost entirely in your hands:
