The quick sizing table
This is an approximate starting point, not gospel. It assumes a twin-tip board and a modern depower kite, and it points at the kite that should leave you comfortably powered, neither schlogging along nor fighting to stay on the water. Find your weight, read across to the wind, and take the number as the middle of a range.

Knots are the standard kitesurfing unit. For reference: 12 kt ≈ 22 km/h ≈ 14 mph, 15 kt ≈ 28 km/h ≈ 17 mph, 20 kt ≈ 37 km/h ≈ 23 mph, 25 kt ≈ 46 km/h ≈ 29 mph.
A few honest caveats before you commit to a number:
- Below about 10 knots, no realistic kite size will get a beginner planing on a twin-tip. That’s a foil or a big-board light-wind game. See what wind speed you need to kitesurf.
- Above 30 knots the table runs out, because that’s strong, gusty, expert territory where most riders pack up.
- The table assumes reasonably steady wind. Gusty wind effectively makes you size down. More on that in gust factor explained.
Why weight matters so much
A kite generates pull, and that pull has to overcome your mass to get you planing and hold you upwind. The heavier you are, the more force you need, which means more kite area in a given wind. The difference is not subtle. In 16 knots, a 60 kg rider might be nicely lit on a 9 m² while a 90 kg rider on the same kite is barely moving. Same wind, same beach, very different kites.
This is why the table has weight rows, and why the calculator asks for your weight first. It’s the variable people most often forget when they ask a friend “what size are you on?” The answer only helps if you weigh roughly the same.
Why the same wind still needs different kites
Weight and wind get you most of the way. Three other things move the answer.
Board size
A bigger board planes earlier and holds power better, so it effectively lets you ride a smaller kite or get going in lighter wind. This is why beginners are pointed at deliberately large twin-tips, and why a light-wind board can rescue a marginal day. A small, high-performance board needs more power to get going, pushing you toward a bigger kite.
Kite type and model
Production kites span roughly 5 m² to 17 m². Small kites in the 5-9 m² range are your strong-wind tools; large kites in the 12-17 m² range are for light wind. But two kites of the same size from different brands or styles can feel a full size apart. A high-aspect race or foil kite delivers more grunt per square metre than a chunky beginner bow kite. The number on the kite is a label, not a promise.
Skill and style
A confident rider works the kite, sends it through the window for power, and stays comfortable on a smaller size than a beginner who flies it parked overhead. Big jumpers also tend to ride slightly bigger for the lofting power. As you progress you’ll naturally drift toward smaller kites in the same wind.
The folk formula (and why to treat it loosely)
You’ll see a rule of thumb floating around the community: rider weight in pounds divided by wind in knots gives kite size in m². So a 165 lb rider in 20 knots lands on roughly 8 m². It’s a handy back-of-the-napkin check and it lands in the right ballpark, but it’s an unverified heuristic, not a tested formula. It ignores board size, kite type and gustiness entirely. Use it for a sanity check, not as your buying decision. The calculator and the table above already bake in more nuance.
How many kites should you own?
You don’t need a garage full of kites to start.
- One kite: Many riders happily cover most of their home conditions with a single well-chosen size, commonly a 10-11 m². Pick the size that matches your most frequent wind, not the rare epic day.
- Two kites: A pairing like a 9 m² and a 12 m² roughly doubles your useable wind range and covers the majority of sessions for an average-weight rider.
- Three kites: Something like a 7, 9 and 12 m² will handle almost everything a recreational rider sees, from a marginal light day to a properly windy one.

Putting it together: a worked example
Say you weigh 80 kg and tomorrow’s forecast is a steady 17 knots, side-onshore, with a modest gust spread. Read the 85 kg row, medium-wind column: that’s around a 12 m². If the forecast were gusty, with gusts pushing well past 22 knots, you’d size down toward an 11 or even a 10 m² so the gusts don’t overpower you and you keep the average comfortably rideable. That single decision, sizing for the gusts rather than the average, prevents a lot of scary moments.
Bottom line
Start with your weight and the forecast wind in knots, use the table or the kite size calculator to land on a starting size, then adjust for your board, your kite model, the gustiness and your own confidence. The number is a range, not a fixed point. When in doubt on a new spot, ask the local crew what they’re riding and what they weigh, then translate to your own weight. Over a season you’ll stop needing the chart at all.
