“Is it windy enough?” is the question every kiter asks before driving to the beach. The honest answer is a range, not a magic number, because it depends on you, your kit, and the kind of session you want. Here’s how to work out your own minimum.

The baseline: about 10 knots to get going

For an average-weight rider on a twin-tip with an appropriately large kite, you can usually get planing once the wind reaches around 10 knots. That’s the floor. At 10 knots the kite is flyable and you can move, but it’s hard work, you’ll be flying the kite actively to generate power, and a single lull can drop you off the plane.

So most people don’t treat 10 knots as a “go” signal. They treat it as the edge of possible.

The comfortable sweet spot: 15-20 knots

Ask experienced riders what they actually wait for and the answer clusters around 15-20 knots (about 28-37 km/h / 17-23 mph), side-onshore. In that band the kite sits in the window and pulls steadily, you can ride upwind without fighting, and you have enough power to play without being overpowered. Choosing a day to learn, or to have a relaxed session? This is the target.

If you’re learning, you want a narrower, friendlier band. The common guidance is to look for roughly 12-14 knots of steady wind. There are good reasons:

  • Below 12 knots the kite feels sluggish and lifeless, which actually makes learning harder, not safer, because you can’t feel how the kite generates power.
  • Above the mid-teens, gusts and power spikes can drag a beginner across the beach before they have the reflexes to manage them.
