The wetsuit question has a clean answer and a messy reality. The clean answer is a chart: water temperature in, neoprene thickness out. The messy reality is that you, the kiter, run colder than the surfer those charts were written for, because you spend far more time up out of the water with the wind hitting wet neoprene. So we’ll give you the chart, in both °C and °F, and then tell you how to adjust it so you’re not the one shivering on the beach.
What the numbers on a wetsuit mean
Wetsuit thickness is written as two numbers, like 3/2, and it’s simply the neoprene thickness in millimetres: the first number is the torso, the second is the arms and legs. So a 3/2 is 3mm over your core and 2mm on your limbs.
The split exists for a reason. Your core is where you most need to stay warm, so it gets the thicker, warmer neoprene. Your limbs need to bend, reach and move, so they get thinner, stretchier neoprene. Thicker is warmer but stiffer; thinner is more flexible but colder. Every wetsuit is a trade-off between those two.
You’ll also see three-number suits like 5/4/3. That just splits the body into three zones instead of two: torso / legs / arms. A 5/4/3 is 5mm on the torso, 4mm on the legs and 3mm on the arms, putting the most warmth at the core, keeping the legs reasonably warm, and leaving the arms thinnest for shoulder flexibility, which matters when you’re reaching up to the bar all session.
The kiter’s temperature-to-thickness chart
Here’s the practical mapping. Treat it as a starting point, not gospel: thresholds vary between brands, suit quality makes a real difference, and your own cold tolerance might shift you a level either way.

A few notes on reading it:
- The bands overlap on purpose. Right at a boundary, your suit quality and how cold you personally run decide which way you go.
- “As needed” means exactly that. Some riders add gloves and a hood earlier than others; cold hands end sessions fast, so don’t tough it out.
- This is for riding, where you’re active and generating heat. If you’re going to be sitting around between sessions, lean warmer.
Why kiters should size one step warmer
Standard wetsuit charts are written for surfers, and a surfer spends a lot of the session sitting in the water, immersed, where the water itself is the main temperature you fight. A kitesurfer is different. You’re up on the board, often clear of the water, with wind blowing across wet neoprene for the whole session. That’s wind chill, and it pulls heat out of you faster than still immersion does.
We’re not going to put a precise number on the offset, because there isn’t a reliable, universal one; it depends on wind strength, air temperature and how much you’re actually in versus out of the water. But the direction is consistent: a kiter tends to feel colder than a surfer in the same water. The simple, safe adjustment is to size one step warmer than a surf chart tells you. If a surf chart says 3/2 for your water, a kiter is often happier in a 4/3, especially on a windy or cool-air day. Being slightly too warm is a minor annoyance; being too cold cuts your session short and dulls your reactions, which matters when you’re managing a kite.
The accessories ladder: boots, gloves, hood
Cold creeps in at the extremities first, so accessories come on in a predictable order as the water drops.
Boots are usually the first add, coming in around 14-17°C (58-63°F). They do two jobs: keep your feet warm, and protect them from rocks, shells and cold launches. Thickness rises as the water cools, from thin 3mm boots into 5mm+ for genuinely cold water.
Gloves (or mitts) typically become worthwhile below about 10-12°C (50-54°F). Cold hands lose dexterity, and gripping the bar with numb fingers is both miserable and a safety issue. Mitts are warmer than gloves but cost you some feel on the bar; many cold-water kiters accept that trade.
A hood matters more than people expect, because a large share of body heat is lost from the head. Below roughly 10-12°C (50-54°F) a hood (built into the suit or separate) makes a big difference to how long you last and how clearly you think. In properly cold water it’s not optional.
The order, then, is boots first, then gloves and hood together as the water gets cold. Add them earlier if you run cold; there are no prizes for suffering.
Fit and seals matter as much as thickness
Two suits of the same thickness can keep you warm differently, and the difference is the fit and the seals.
A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin that your body warms. If the suit is loose, cold water flushes in and out as you move, and that constant flushing chills you no matter how thick the neoprene is. A snug fit with minimal gaps at the neck, wrists and ankles is what keeps the warm layer where it belongs. Sealed or taped seams, and features like a good neck closure, reduce flushing further.
Flexibility counts too, especially for kiting. You’re reaching up to the bar constantly, so a suit that’s stiff across the shoulders will tire you out and make the session less fun. Better neoprene gives you warmth and stretch together, which is part of what you’re paying for as you move up in suit quality. So when you’re choosing, don’t just read the millimetres: a well-fitting, well-sealed 4/3 can easily out-warm a baggy 5/4.
Judging it by your spot, not the season
Water temperature lags well behind air temperature through the year, so don’t dress for the calendar. A bright, warm day in late spring can sit over genuinely cold water, and a mild autumn day can still have summer-warm water. Always dress for the water, then adjust up for wind chill.
